The local chapter of Habitat for Humanity International formed in 1991 with the mission of extending successful home ownership to families in need in the Ausable Valley. It takes two years and about 2000 volunteer hours (a quarter from the owners) to build a house. They also coach the family on home ownership issues from budgeting to maintenance, and provide a no-interest mortgage on the cash cost of the house, which is repaid by the family and the monies re-used to build another house.

If you enjoy building, especially if you have a skill like roofing or plumbing, this is a great way to help people. There are other roles, like providing food for the crew on construction weekends or being the ever-useful gofer. Donations can be mailed or done from their web page. Donated materials are welcome. Land for homes is their greatest need.
