Started in 1955, High Peaks Artists is an organization of painters that presents the annual High Peaks Art Show at the KV Firehouse in early August. Lines form before the opening and eager buyers quickly purchase about 40% of what is displayed - an exceptional proportion for any art show. So, if you want a piece by a specific high peaks artist, go early. Painters of all ages can show up to three works (entries are not juried). Volunteers help run the show each year, but the real work is done by the artists who create the works of art. What most people don't know is that 25% of the proceeds from the show are distributed to community organizations in Keene like the ones profiled in this booklet and also provide up to two scholarships for KCS graduates majoring in Art in college. High Peaks Artists does not solicit any funds. In doing this show for so many years, the group carries on the tradition of painters in the Valley, who started spending summers here long ago. Supporting each other in their art, providing a venue to show and sell paintings, and using art to generate some funds for local charitable organizations are pretty impressive feats for the artists of Keene. If you are an artist, you should get in touch with this group. If you aren’t, you should definitely go to the art show! |
