KVNH has been an integral part of the Keene community since it began caring for
people in 1910. Some folks still think of it as 'the hospital' even though
it has not been one since 1978. Today, the Neighborhood House is an
adult home for 50 seniors
from Keene and surrounding
communities. Many are long-term residents while others are there for
short-term periods. In it live the people who are the heart and heritage of
our town, currently Jimmy
Goodwin for example. You can get really old here with a high quality of
life.
Operating 24x7 with a
$1.2 million budget, it is
Keene's second largest employer. Ten regular
volunteers plus groups from the school, Girl Scouts, churches, and KV
Library help out. KVNH always needs volunteers; give Richard a call about
current needs, such as people skilled in fund-raising,
or people just willing to take a
resident out for a walk or for a slice of pie at the Noonmark.
Recent improvements to the building are wonderful, but
ate into the KVNH endowment. KVNH
receives no Government funds except for 6-8 SSI residents and what is
received barely covers half of the cost; otherwise all other residents are
private pay. Annual Appeal fund-raising nets about $25,000 but needs
to double, largely to support residents who cannot pay and compensate the
dedicated staff. If you are in a position to help with the endowment, please
call Richard. |
