Marcy LeClair,
Librarian
|
The Keene Public Library has been a part of the Keene community since its creation in 1904 through the generosity of public-spirited individuals. It lends some 12,000 books, magazines, CDs and videos to adults and children of all ages during the year. Its four-week summer reading program benefits over 20 children, who are rewarded weekly with an ice cream certificate from Stewart’s and a lottery drawing. The library, like its Keene Valley counterpart, supplies broadband Internet service to the community and is a link to the vast world of online information. Both are part of the Clinton-Essex-Franklin (CEF) county circulating library system, giving residents access to many important online resources and a much wider collection of books to lend. One room of the building is provided for the Food Pantry. There are two paid employees and three volunteers. Funds for the library are mostly supplied by the town. A small amount of funding is supplied by the State of New York and the CEF system. Donations to the library help to improve the facility and increase its collections. Donations of most books, videos and other lending items are welcome. Donations of CDs have created a large selection of music, for example. Call the library to discuss whether your donations will be usable. During the school year, the two libraries are typically open on different days of the week - so consider the one at the other end of town when the one near you is closed. |
