Founded in 1999 by poet Chase Twichell, Ausable Press is a not-for-profit independent literary press located in Keene. Its mission is to publish poetry that investigates and expresses human consciousness in language that goes where prose cannot. It publishes four to six books annually and a total of 29 books so far. They actively solicit promising manuscripts year round, but also accept unsolicited submissions. All editorial decisions are made by a single editor, poet and founder Chase Twichell, who reads every manuscript that comes in. They are interested in poets who strive to discover what's true, wherever that pursuit may take them, and to express it in language that is, in Pound's phrase, "as simple as possible but no simpler." Donations to Ausable Press directly support their work of finding, publishing, and promoting the best of contemporary poetry. Authors include Pulitzer Prize winners, mid-career, and first-time poets. They are also involved in various outreach projects to bring poetry to schools and libraries in the region, including a program through which they distribute free books to any school or library in the 5-county area that requests them. Ausable Press is accepting donations until Jan 1, 2009, when it will be acquired by Copper Canyon, also a not-for-profit and the biggest poetry publisher in the country. |
