What is Greater Keene?  Why is this only about Keene?

By Greater Keene, we mean the whole Town of Keene, including its three hamlets of Keene, Keene Valley and St Huberts and all the rest of the area bounded by those familiar “Entering Town of Keene” signs.

We limited the booklet to the Town and organizations that serve the Town because it was clear that most people were not even aware of what was here in Town.  This web version does contain links to other organizations in the area covering sports, education, arts and culture, and museums/history. See Other Links About the Area.

How can I get a copy of the printed booklet?

There were 2200 copies printed in June 2008.  They are available in the libraries, Town Hall, churches and shops in Town.  This is expected to the the last printed booklet.  This website will be updated periodically

Where did you get the idea for this booklet?

We got the basic idea from George McCully, a retired renaissance history professor at Wellesley College.  He started something called the Massachusetts Catalogue for Philanthropy which profiled 100 small hi-impact charities in Massachusetts and he mailed it to high net worth households during Christmas shopping season.  We thought a local version would be great thing for Keene. Take a look at his national web site:  http://www.catalogueforphilanthropy.org/

Are donations to these groups tax deductable?

Unless we specifically say otherwise, all these groups have told us they are 501(c)(3) qualified for tax deductible gifts.  We did not go check up on each group.

Why did you do this?

We wanted to take the mystery out of some of the Town’s organizations so you didn’t have to “know someone who knows someone” to get involved in these groups.  They all need contributions and volunteer time.

How did you find all the information?

We interviewed the leaders of almost all these groups.  The leaders were asked to approve what you see in print.

How was the booklet distributed?

2200 copies were printed. The AuSable Club distributed copies to members and placed copies in guest rooms.  All of the profiled organizations received copies for distribution including, for example, the Libraries, Fire Departments, Churches, etc.  Other distribution points included Town Hall, the school, Bicentennial events, Valley Grocery, the High Peaks Art Show, and  East Branch Friends of the Arts events.

 Who paid for all this?

This web site is hosted by KVVI for free.  We (Jim Herman and Dave Mason) did the research, writing, many of the photos, the print layout, distribution and this web site ourselves.

The cost of printing was covered by ourselves, and two funds at the Adirondack Community Trust – the McClelland Family Fund and an anonymous fund. We covered the remainder.  The donations were handled via the Keene Community Trust.

How can I get my organization listed?  How do I send you changes in contact information or changes in the profile you have posted?

The quickest thing to do is send us an email with a draft profile, much like the ones already on this web site.  We will get in touch with you regarding any editorial details.  We will update the web site fairly frequently.

If your organization is already profiled, please send us any change via email.
