We often think of government as “someone else”, but here in Keene, government is just some of us, volunteering to do some hard work. Here is how you can volunteer.

Running for Town Board is easy. All you need is a petition signed by 5% of the registered voters in your party, 17 for Republican and 14 for Democrat. You can even invent your own party and run with one signature. The info is at: www.co.essex.ny.us/elect.asp.  Although they get $4300/yr. and 80% of health insurance, it is basically a volunteer job, given the big time commitment.

Planning Board members are appointed by the Town Board and serve for 6 years. Anyone interested can submit a letter of interest to the Town Board. There is no compensation.

To run for School Board you need to get a petition from the School District Clerk, Susan Whitney (576-4555) and collect 25 signatures. You need training in fiscal oversight, accountability and fiduciary responsibility. You also need to be a resident for a year, over 18, a US citizen, and you cannot be a current employee of KCS. There is no compensation.

The Meals-on-Wheels program of the County Office for Aging requires local distribution of meals by volunteer drivers to typically 4 to 8 recipients at a time. Ethel Webb is coordinator: bethel@kvvi.net, 576-4684
